PAT Testing & other
Electrical
It is estimated by The Health &
Safety Executive that portable appliances account for
25% of reportable electrical accidents. Consequently the
Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) coupled with The
Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal obligation
on:-
employers,
employees and
self-employed persons
to comply with the provisions of the regulations and
take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no
danger results from the use of such equipment. Even
where there is no legal requirement for testing,
insurance companies will, on occasion, require it to be
done.
These "reasonably practicable steps" require a
systematic and regular program of maintenance,
inspection and testing where:-
appliances are used by:-
employees
the public may use appliances in establishments such as
hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.
appliances are supplied or hired
appliances are repaired or serviced.
This maintenance, inspection and testing is known
collectively "Portable Appliance Testing" or PAT testing
for short. This can be more complex than might first
appear as both the nature and extent of the testing is
based on the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, the
type of appliance, the nature of its use and the
environment in which it is used.
Clearly in order to ensure that you
not only meet your legal obligations, but also minimise
the risk of accidents which might even lead to
substantial damages claims, or, of course, fires, you
want to ensure that this testing is carried out properly
by appropriately skilled, qualified and experienced
people.
