    How often should a fire drill be carried out?

    How often should these be tested?

    Fire alarms should be tested monthly, with the connections tested every three months and a complete test carried out every six months.

    What work is carried out during a service?

    In a fire alarm service, everything is inspected, from the wiring, to the battery, to the sound of the alarm itself. The servicing must be carried out by a qualified, competent individual.

    Fire Extinguishers

    Do all staff members need to learn how to use fire extinguishers?

    Not all staff need to learn, but the fire wardens certainly must know the correct way to use all types of fire extinguishers.

    How many Fire extinguishers do I need?

    There should be at least 2 fire extinguishers per floor.

    How often should fire extinguishers be inspected?

    Fire extinguishers should have their pressure gauges checked monthly to make sure they are holding their pressure.

    My pull pin is bent? Do I have to replace the pin?

    Yes you do, as a bent pin could jam in an emergency.

    What is involved in annual maintenance for fire extinguishers?

    The extinguisher will be inspected for obvious visible damage, as well as inspected to see if its pressure gauge is reading correctly, the lock pin is intact and the tamper seal has not been broken.

    What types of fire extinguisher do I need?

    Why do fire extinguishers expire?

    Fire extinguishers expire when the seal weakens and the compressed gas will escape, lowering the pressure and making the extinguisher less effective.

    The certification lasts for three years, but a refresher course every year is recommended.

    How many fire wardens do I need?

    The amount of fire wardens necessary for your property depends on a number of factors: the number of floors, the number of staff, the type of workplace and the layout of the property. These factors combined will determine the level of risk in your property – low, medium or high.

    For low risk properties, you should have one warden for every 50 people. For medium and high risk premises, you should have one warden for every 20 and 15 people respectively. You can find out about the duties of a fire warden here.
